Getting Rid of Grease from Carpet

Grease can be quite a bit challenging to remove and the earlier you can treat it, the better. The techniques below are intended to remove food grease from your carpets. If you need to remove engine grease or oil stains, you’ll want to go through this.

Follow these steps together with the proper cleaning solution for your carpet type.

Things Needed:

  • Clean white towels or paper towels
  • Cleaning solution*
    • Wool: Dry Cleaning Solvent (straight from the bottle)
    • Synthetics: 1 tbsp household ammonia, 1 quart cold water, and ¼ teaspoon liquid soap
    • Oriental: 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts cold water
  • Heavy Object like books, dish, etc.
  • Spray bottle with cold water
  • Spray bottle (for cleaning solution)
  • Vacuum

*At all times, test a small, inconspicuous area of the carpet using the intended cleaning solution first to guarantee no staining, color fading or other damage will occur.

Directions:

  1. Get started by blotting using a clean cloth to remove as much of the grease as possible. It’s essential to BLOT throughout this whole process DO NOT SCRUB. Your main aim is to “lift” the stain, not rub it into the fibers. Working externally of the stain towards the center help keep the stain from spreading.
  2. Spray stain using proper cleaning solution for your carpet type.
  3. Blot using a clean dry cloth until no more stain shows on the cloth. You simply must change your cloth often or use a clean patch of the towel each and every time as you are blotting to be sure you aren’t spreading the stain.
  4. Perform again steps 2 and 3 until the stain has stopped being visible.
  5. Spray with clean water to wash off.
  6. Blot using clean cloth. Do it again as required to be sure all cleaning solution has been removed. Residue left from cleaning solutions can collect dirt faster and will create another situation to be handled.
  7. Cover stain using clean cloth or stack of paper towels and place heavy weight on top (heavy books, etc.)
  8. Allow for it to set for several hours or overnight to soak up any remaining liquid.
  9. Allow for area to dry thoroughly.
  10. Vacuum to revive fibers to normal texture.

Guidelines:

  • Never allow alcohol to soak into the carpet backing – it will damage the bond holding the carpet together.
  • Never use bleach or ammonia on wool carpets since it will damage the fibers.
  • Never use carpet spot cleaners on oriental rugs because it will damage the fibers.
  • Never use laundry detergent or dishwasher detergents as they quite simply may damage the fibers of your carpet.
  • Other cleaning solutions which you can use for synthetic carpets include mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol, paint thinner, lighter fluid (Caution! A number of these items are flammable).
  • Oriental rugs have to be cleaned with caution. In case your rug is an antique, silk, or part silk, seek the helkp of a professional to remove the stain.
  • Spot Shot’ is a cleaner which can be found at most stores and is popular for removing tough stains.
  • Use cold water to keep from setting the stain at all times.
