Cigarette/Cigar/Pipe Smoke Removal
Things Needed:

  • Big box of baking soda (dependent upon the size of the room)
  • Dried lavender (optional)
  • Vacuum Cleaners

  1. This technique is generally safe for each carpet type.
  2. Dust the entire carpet with the baking soda.
  3. If you want the room to have a pleasurable light scent, mix the lavender together with the baking soda before sprinkling.
  4. Allow to sit overnight (or no less than 5 hours).
  5. Vacuum carpets.
  6. Do it again if necessary.
  7. In case the above technique does not eliminate the odor, you need to call in a professional carpet cleaner just like Carpet Cleaning Auckland who will have the cleaning chemicals required to eliminate stubborn odors.
  8. If everything else fails, you might need to replace the carpet.

Remember: There are different kinds of carpet and room deodorizers on the market made to sprinkle on your carpets and vacuum. Regrettably, many of these are unsuccessful in the long term against smoke odors as they do not neutralize the odor, but instead mask it with manufactured scents, which sooner or later fade, letting the original odor dominate.
Burnt Food Smoke Removal

Things Needed:

  • A few bowls of distilled white vinegar
  • Big box of baking soda (dependent upon the size of the room)
  • Dried lavender (optional)
  • Vacuum Cleaners
  • Vanilla extract (optional)

  1. Observe steps 1-5 previously mentioned for cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke.
  2. Place several bowls of distilled white vinegar throughout the room, which will actually absorb odors remaining in the air. Leave for 3-5 days.
  3. If you don’t particularly care for the smell of vinegar, place a few drops of vanilla extract into every vinegar bowl to reduce the scent of vinegar.

Smoke Due to a Fire Removal

Smoke odors brought on by fire are particularly challenging to remove and can affect your carpet and other parts of your house in different ways depending on the source of the fire and the type of smoke it makes. A few particular types of smoke odors are listed below:

  • Dry Smoke – Rapid burning at high temperatures.
  • Fuel Oil Soot – Furnace puff backs result in fuel oil soot.
  • Protein – Practically invisible, discolors paints and varnishes. Intense stinky odor.
  • Wet Smoke – Low heat, smoldering, stinky odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are usually more difficult to clean.
  • Other Types – Tear gas, fingerprint powder, as well as fire extinguisher residue are other types.

In general, it is best to contact a smoke damage professional. There are products available on the market known as Ozone generators that may help in lowering the smoke odor from your carpet. These products may be efficient in reducing the odor, but unless the source of the odor (i.e. the carpet) is resolved, the odor will never be totally eliminated.

A lot of people hesitate to contact a smoke damage specialist because of the expensive, sometimes dangerous and environmentally unfriendly nature of the procedure (i.e. the use of ozone neutralizers). However, there are companies available who employ smoke removal procedures which are beneficial to our environment . These services may present an affordable solution.

In sum, however, in case your carpets have absorbed the smell caused by smoke damage, there is little that can be done not having the services of a professional.
